First Take Lab is a small, independently run tool for generating short videos with Seedance and a few other hosted models. No venture funding, no growth team — one operator paying real inference bills.
That last part shapes everything on this site, so it's worth being explicit about it.
In film, the first take is the one you hope works. Most of the time it doesn't, and you burn another one.
AI video has the same problem, except each take costs money. People routinely spend $50–100 getting a clip they can actually use. The waste isn't in the price per generation — it's in the number of generations you throw away.
So our job isn't to sell you more takes. It's to make the first one land more often. In practice that means telling you things most sites won't:
Most "free AI video" sites don't mention money at all. We do, on nearly every page, because the number explains everything else:
| Model | Real hosted cost |
|---|---|
| Seedance 1.0 Lite · 720p | ~$0.036 / second |
| Seedance 1.0 Pro · 1080p | ~$0.124 / second |
| Seedance 2.5 · 480p | ~$0.22 / second |
| Seedance 2.5 · 720p | ~$0.47 / second |
A five-second 720p clip on Seedance 2.5 therefore costs about $2.36 in inference before anyone earns anything. A thirty-second one costs about $14.
This is why:
If a site promises unlimited free HD video, check how long it has been online.
Seedance 2.5's headline feature is one-take 30-second generation. We offer it. We also think most people shouldn't start there.
Thirty seconds costs roughly six times a five-second clip, and longer generations drift more — characters change, audio desyncs, continuity slips. That's not a knock on the model; it's what happens when you ask any current system to hold a scene together for that long.
Our advice, which costs us money to give: get the shot right at five seconds first, then extend. The model listens to prompts better when it has less to hold together.
Generation fails sometimes — a prompt or reference image gets blocked by the model's content filter, a provider times out, a queue backs up. When that happens:
To be precise about what this does not cover: if a generation completes successfully and you simply don't like the result, credits are not returned. We'd be lying if we promised otherwise — the inference has already been paid for on our side. What we try to do instead is reduce how often that happens, which is the whole point of the section above.
A thin, honest layer on top of hosted inference. We don't train models. We don't own GPUs. What we do:
All generation runs on fal.ai as the inference provider. Seedance itself is built by ByteDance Seed. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by ByteDance — First Take Lab is an independent tool that calls publicly available APIs.
